Wisconsin Statewide Parent Educator Initiative

WSPEI is a service for parents, educators, and others interested in parent-educator partnerships for children with disabilities. It supports increased sharing of information among parents, schools, projects, organizations and agencies through networking meetings, conferences, person-to-person contact, and media. Mary Skadahl, is the State Project Coordinator. WSPEI offers  Parents in Partnership trainings to parents of children with disabilities in various regions of the state. The participants will attend four or five weekend sessions and learn about working with statewide systems and other educational issues. There are WSPEI Parent Coordinators and Parent Liaisons in each of the 12 CESAs (Cooperative Educational Service Agencies) available to assist parents and educators. They can help with:

  • Assisting parents to become more commfortable with the IEP process by providing access to Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction publications and other relative resource materials.
  • Provide in-services to district staff.
  • Consult with district staff to provide a parent's point of view regarding special education plans.
  • Support your District's establishment of parent support or advisory groups.
  • Facilitate the collaboration of parents, educators and community agencies in maximizing resources to increase family involvement.
  • Assist parents and school districts to connect with training opportunities that meet their needs.
